How to Prepare for Severe Weather

As a company that offers insurance claims management in Wisconsin, we have seen our share of damage to homes and property. Much of this damage comes from severe weather, like storms and tornadoes. So here are a few tips on how to prepare your family and your home for the upcoming summer storm months. Remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

The first thing you should do is have emergency supplies set aside. Included in your emergency kit: batteries, a flash light, a battery-operated radio, several gallons of water, canned food and a basic first aid kit that has band-aids, gauze, hand sanitizer, a thermometer and adhesive medical tape. You should also have a list of emergency contacts and copies of your medical insurance cards. Also, it is a good idea to have a change of clothes too.

Keep an eye on the weather as well. Sign up for text message alerts, if possible, and always make sure your car has plenty of gas in it in case your area is ordered to evacuate for any reason. Make sure all of your family members know where to meet in case you get separated.

You should also have a safe area of your home to go to in case of a tornado. The room should be windowless and, if possible, underground. If you cannot get to a windowless room, try to get to a bathroom and into a shower stall or bathtub. Make sure you seek shelter there and do not come out until there is some type of all clear sign or someone comes to get you.

Make sure each member of your family knows and understands what to do in case of severe weather.

If it is safe to do so, talk a walk around your home after the storm to see what damage has been done. Take notes and photos too.

And after the storm or severe weather event hits, make sure you call an insurance claims management company like Norcia Insurance Consultants for help with your insurance company.
